Athens Stump Grinding

Athens Stump Grinding

Stumps can be a serious threat when they begin to rot, develop termite and ant infestations, or develop diseases. When a stump is left to it’s own devices for years on end, serious issues like this can occur. This puts the rest of your property at risk as well, because generally speaking, pest infestations grow until they’re stopped- what’s to stop them from migrating to your home next? Not to mention the toll on the soil the root system takes. Many people may not know this, but when a tree is cut down, the roots below the ground level will continue to take the nutrients and water from the soil, leaving the surrounding landscaping parched and nutrient deficient.

Why Is It Important To Grind a stump Down Below The Surface?

Why is it important to grind a stump down below the surface?

This is a question that we occasionally get asked, and it’s a fair question no doubt.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper and take a far shorter amount of time to just grind a stump down to the ground, so it’s level with the grass? Yes, it would take a shorter amount of time! And yes, for some amount of time, everything would be level. But with a situation like this, it’s best to inspect what you expect.

Let’s start by talking about stumps- okay, stumps are the trunks of trees that have been cut down. As a stump grinding company, we’re often called in because people have stumps in their backyard and it’s not level with the ground, it doesn’t look good, it’s hard to landscape around it, it broke the lawn mower, a child bumped his knee on it, etc.

There are a million reasons why people want their stumps removed from their property. The problem with the original question posed, is that stumps are still alive, and they can still grow. They are attached to the soil through the roots, and they are still living things that can attract termite infestations, ant populations, and the like. Stumps need to be ground below ground level to remove the bulk of the root structure, so the stump can be full grounded, and the soil can provide nutrients for whatever else is going in its place, grass seed, topsoil, landscaping, a new tree, what have you. The soil won’t be able to support a new growth if it is still feeding the root system of an existing stump. For this reason, we have to grind a stump down and remove most of the roots, so that way the roots are no longer using the nutrients in the soil, and the area can be used for another purpose.

Every stump is different, so the depth of each grind varies. However, generally speaking, most stumps should be ground to a depth of 5-10 inches, depending on the size, the depth of the roots, the extensiveness of the root ball, et cetera. Also, if you’re wanting to plant a new tree in the same exact place the stump was, that’s going to require a deeper grind as well, so the lingering roots don’t choke out the new root system of the new tree.

We hope this was helpful and answered any questions you had about stump grinding depth, and why we grind below the surface! If you have any questions regarding stump removal, Athens Stump Grinding Pros, or are looking for a free estimate, give us a call! We offer prompt service, efficient work, and professional grinding. What To Do With Wood Chips After Stump Grinding

When we get calls to come and provide stump grinding services on properties in Athens, one thing that most people don’t realize is that after the stump grinding takes place, you will be left with quite a lot of wood pulp, chips, and mulch.

The stump grinder works by using a rotating saw with metal teeth that grind the stump into small pieces, all of which will pile up into a large amount of wood bits. Whether you plan to use the wood remains for mulch and landscaping, or you want it removed and taken away, that is up to you.

It is often surprising the sheer amount of mulch left behind by the stump, because it is much larger than the size of the stump. The volume of the stump grindings is fluffed in a way, because while the wood used to be compacted in the stump, it’s now filled with air, which contributes to the amount left behind.

If you hire a professional stump grinding company to remove your stump, they will typically ask you if you’d like the wood chips to be removed, or if you’d like to use them for mulch and landscaping purposes. If you have it removed, that service will likely be charged into your stump removal cost. Chances are, keeping the mulch for landscaping purposes will be the cheaper route.

If you’ve used a professional stump grinding service, they will grind the stump down around 10-12 inches below ground level. They do this to prevent future growth from the root system, and to ensure a smooth surface after the process is done. Some of the wood chips can be used to fill the hole that is left behind after the grinding takes place, and can be smoothed out to leave a clean landscape.

After that, you’ll want to do something with the rest of the grindings. You’ll want to remove the grindings from your lawn fairly quickly, because grass doesn’t grow well under wood chippings. What you can do is rake up the mulch, and prepare it for use in your landscaping. This will also help offset your stump grinding cost, if you use it as mulch for other trees and landscape installations, like walkways or gardens. To use as mulch, spread the chips around the base of the shrub or tree and move outward in a circular fashion, until the area is covered a few inches out.

The stump grinding material can also be used in a compost, and we can definitely help by recommending local compost bins if you don’t have one yourself.

There are many things you can do with the organic material left behind after hiring a stump grinding company, so if you have any other suggestions send them over and we’ll include them in our next post!

If you have any stumps that need to be removed, give us a call and we’d be glad to handle all Athens stump grinding needs you may have. We have some of the most affordable stump grinding costs around, so you can get those stumps off your lawn without breaking the bank. We service the greater Athens area, so give us a call and we’d be happy to give you a quote.

Tree Stump Removal Services in Athens, GA

When it comes to tree stump removal and specifically stump grinding services, you want to go with a company you can trust, one that has experience removing stumps of all different types, from all different types of access points, while being careful not to disturb or harm any surrounding property.

Unfortunately, finding a professional tree stump removal company that is all of those things might be a little bit of a find.

Within the space of tree service and generally contractor work, people who work within this realm can often be lacking a bit in professionalism. Thankfully, if you’re looking for stump grinding in Athens, Georgia, our team can handle the work, and would be glad to speak with you regarding the job.

We’re passionate about stump grinding, and we know it can be a bit daunting for our clients when they’re searching for an appropriate business online, and they see no website, bad reviews, etc. Inconsistencies on the web, whether in regards to a website, tree stump removal cost, or anything else for that matter, can be confusing and frustrating as a customer. To combat this rampant issue, we train each of our team members to provide every client with respect, and to treat them with our customer service standards, no matter the day, time, or job.

We also only partner with tree service companies that we know hold the same high standards that we do, so when we get called in to do stump grinding and tree stump removal, we know the rest of the job has gone just as smoothly. A lot of our business actually comes from partnerships with tree removal businesses who sub contract out the stump grinding, so it’s important to us that as a tree stump removal business we are aligned with companies that share our values, quality of work, and professionalism.

As a stump grinding business, we have the ability to focus in on our service, and get better all the time. We’ve narrowed in on this business because we like being able to hone our craft, get better at tree stump removal, and provide our clients with the service and attention to detail that they’re looking for when improving their landscape. Attention to detail is a big one in this industry, because we are employing large, heavy machinery on client’s properties, and we have details that are important to watch out for, such as root growth, termites, utility lines, not to mention the house and cars that are likely to be near the stump. Wood chips flying around during the grinding process can be dangerous, so taking safety precautions, and being attentive during the removal is very important.

If you’re looking to have stumps removed or ground up, give us a call and we’ll either ask you for more information regarding your project, or we’ll give you a date and time for us to come out and give you an estimate. If we ask for information over the phone, we will ask quite a few questions about the stump size, the measurement from one side of the base to the other, any gates/ fencing that we’ll need to go through, etc, so please be patient with us. You can be sure that all of these questions will help us to give you the most accurate pricing, and the best service possible.

New Tree Growth After Stump Grinding

After stump grinding in Athens, GA, it’s important to take the proper steps to prepare the area before you attempt to grow anything in its place, due to the extensive root systems and the left behind stump remnants. Getting stumps removed is a great way to enhance your outdoor space, increase your property value, and clear the space for new landscaping. A fresh clean slate is the best way to start the new year, and there’s a few things you should do to make sure the area is ready for new growth.

With stump grinding, it’s important to note that if you are looking to grow another tree, or plant extensive landscaping over the spot where the stump was removed, you should let your stump grinding company know ahead of time. The reason for this is the stumps are typically ground to a depth of 4-6 inches below ground, to allow for a smooth surface, and a fully ground up stump. However, this depth may not be sufficient if you are looking to plant a tree in the same place as the original. If you plan on planting a new tree, your stump removal company may recommend grinding the stump to a depth up to 10-12 inches. This is because although the stump is fully ground, there are still roots from the stump, extending far below the ground surface, all of which can make it difficult to grow another tree. The old roots can take the moisture out of the soil, and can make it difficult for a new tree’s roots to take hold. Thus, if it’s your plan to plant a new tree, let your stump removal company know, and they’ll let you know the best course of action!

Typically they will suggest grinding the stump to a greater depth, or perhaps root excavation, which can be a fairly intensive procedure. Digging up the roots of stumps is a pretty big undertaking, and is often lots of work, but may be necessary depending on your landscaping plans. This may be the best course of action, depending on what your plans for the area may be. If none of these options are right for you, your tree care and stump grinding experts should be able to recommend where the best places would be for you to plant new trees, in a space that is far enough away from the original root system. A general rule of thumb is to remove roots in a diameter of three times the size of the root ball of the tree. However, your stump grinding company should be able take into account these factors, and recommend to you the best options for your situation.

Safety and Stump Grinding

There are many potential hazards that come along with stump grinding, due to the nature of bringing a large piece of powerful machinery around buildings, homes, people, electrical wiring, et cetera. There’s a level of customer care required when taking on work such as ours, to ensure that everyone and everything is taken into consideration, and is protected during the stump grinding process. When we first started our business, it was important to us that all of the clients we serviced in Athens and into Watkinsville and Bogart enjoyed the level of work we did, while also being confident in our ability to do the job right, without any issues or snags. Stump grinding can be difficult and messy, depending on the situation of the stump, so when hiring a stump grinding company, it’s important to be aware of the safety precautions they take, their processes for ensuring a safe workplace, and any utility checks they may do.

When training team members or instructing current employees on the proper protocol, it has always been important to us to maintain a high level of customer care, by going out of our way to ensure our clients receive a positive experience both with us and our services. Since stumps are often found in gardens, yards, and in close proximity to homes and vehicles, it is of the utmost important that the stump grinding does not damage any property at all. Stump grinding is also a job that often requires underground work, so when we grind the stump below ground level, it’s important to note where any power lines may be, so they’re not damaged in the process.

All of these factors are a crucial part of providing an excellent stump grinding service in Athens, GA, and while these risks associated with stump grinding are real, it is our job to mitigate these issues and prevent them, which is what we always aim to do. Part of owning our stump removal business has been learning from past experiences, and as we go, always implementing better procedures in place, so that our customer always gets the best service possible. When we first started out, it was always our aim to be the best stump grinding company in Athens, and to be a company that was customer based, and focused on improving our services, and improving our customer care every single time. Our team members are experienced and skilled at removing stumps from all properties, and they have been trained in the proper safety precautions necessary when involving work like this.

When it came to determining what kind of stump removal company we wanted to be, and what kind of people we wanted to work with, our strategy has always been quality over quantity- because we value people with a similar philosophy to us- who believe that work should always be done right the first time around, with quality, attention to detail, and professionalism. That’s who we are, and what we strive for. We’re always working on improving our stump grinding skills, and staying on top of the industry standards, so we can grind stumps for our customers every day, the best we can.

Stump Grinding- DIY or Pro?

When it comes to stump grinding, it’s important to first decide what route you’re going to take, since there are generally two options: will you do it yourself, or will you hire a company to take care of it for you? As far as removing stumps from your property, that is entirely your decision. Once you decide which way you’re going to go about removing the stumps, that’s where things get more nuanced.

If you’re looking to grind a stump yourself, there are many places that offer rental services, where you can select a stump grinder machine for a set number of hours for a fee. You’ll need to transport the machine to and from the location, and will need to ensure that you complete the task within the allocated time rented, or risk being charged for the next time slot. These machines are often old, not very powerful, and on the smaller end, which can make the stump grinding task fairly strenuous and long. Oftentimes it will take longer than the typical rental period is for, which is important to consider, if cost is one of the primary factors in your decision to do it yourself. Often times we’ve found that our services are more affordable than renting a machine and doing it yourself, since we own our machines and aren’t charging by the hour.

If you choose to hire a stump grinding company, there are many businesses in Athens, GA who perform this service. Lots of arborists offer stump grinding services as well, although they often sub contract out the work to one of the dedicated stump removal companies also. When it comes to professional stump grinding services, you have many good choices within the greater Athens area, and we hope that you’ll consider our business when it comes to any land clearing, stump grinding, and stump removal services you find yourself needing. We pride ourselves on our professionalism, attention to detail, efficiency, and effectiveness.
